My husband is a strawberry pie fan. And a strawberries on waffles fan. And a strawberries on … you get the picture. The more berries the better. I, on the other hand, love a six-layer chocolate mint slice of cake.
When you’re talking dessert, it’s easy to get caught up in the delectable-looking presentation. Makes you want to grab a fork and dive in!
Hey. Here’s an idea…put a scoop of ice cream on it too! Sprinkles? You love sprinkles! Chopped nuts? Love the crunch. A drizzle of caramel? Su-u-r-r-e, why not?! And don’t forget the cherry on top!
That’s all well and good (and yes, we all have permission to indulge once in a while!), unless you’re looking at the less than delectable presentation of life piled high with too much ‘filling.’ What then?
It brings to mind the old adage, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”
One of the coaching tools I enjoy using is the Pie of Life. With a little bit of thought and some paper and pencil, it doesn’t take a client very long to label eight to ten ‘slices’ of their Life Pie (unless it’s a Costco pie – then you can get 16 to 20 slices out of those hummers!). No wonder we’re stressed out at times.
As simple a tool as this is, there is something about seeing the black on white that often sparks the realization of how many areas of life are contributing to the ‘filling.’ Where and how we begin parceling out this elephant pie to manageable portions is an essential element of the personal coaching process.
It’s kind of like un-baking the pie. You began with specific ingredients and a recipe, then life (or you!) got carried away with adding this, that, or the other. What started out as a recipe to die for is beginning to make you think it might just kill you off.
I have good news. You don’t have to remain buried under a mile-high pile of strawberries or stay stuck in the bottom layer of that mountainous wedge of chocolate mint cake. Life is meant to be abundant in a life-giving way (John 10:10), not in a killer stress-inducing manner. I’m here to help.

What ‘slices’ of your Life Pie immediately came to mind?
Was your initial response one of getting hit in the face with the whole pie?
Or, wanting to pick up a fork and enjoy the next bite?
