When was the last time you looked in the mirror and thought to yourself, “Self, you are a leader!”
The more humble among us might reply with, “Uh, never.”
Some might be gearing up for another run at it, while others might be screwing up their courage to show up for duty one more day.
Still others may find that they are thriving as a leader.
Regardless of what rung of the ladder you are poised upon, somewhere in your life pie are the berries and the pits of leadership:
- mistakes to be made
- practices to make perfect
- problems to solve
- lessons to be learned
- others to lead
- others to follow
- change to effect
- stability to maintain
- transition to orchestrate
- finding gaps in the enemy’s defenses
- clearing away minor opposition
- preventing unexpected contact
- temporarily going ahead of a larger force to prepare for a landing or other operation
- making reconnaissance to ensure safety for the main body…
Wait a minute.
Are we talking leadership or “You’re in the army now!”? If you are a believer in Christ, then both. As part of His family, you have also been inducted into His army of believers to push back the darkness and bring forth His light in this world.
The best part is, He has been given to you as an L-E-A-D-E-R.
Being a leader begins with acknowledging Him as the true Leader.

If the bulleted list above disappointed you with its non-mention of trophies, awards and accolades, it’s not that those don’t sometimes come with the territory.
It’s that those are God’s to give, for He rewards those who believe that He is and who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6) No one who is a great, effective leader for God and for good in this world can live and lead apart from this understanding.
One of the first keys to leading with your life is recognizing that humankind is fickle. Climbing man’s ladder makes for shaky footing. Love you one minute, ready to toss you out on your keister the next.
Jesus was no exception when it came to man’s double-mindedness. He knows what it feels like.
Which is what makes Him the perfect L-E-A-D-E-R for those of us He has called to follow in His steps.
